If you give them more information they will be able to provide a better service, otherwise they can't read your mind. then remember that your slight convenience isn't worth their job. returning a sign-for recorded item to the delivery office, not leaving a parcel behind a bin etc. If you're angry with the postie for doing their job properly, i.e.

Specify to the sender that you DON'T want it signed for, tracked 48 will give you a tracking code without the need for a signature.
If they don't deliver due to needing a signature, that's surely the fault of whoever sent it recorded. If you receive a red card you can also ask for redelivery to a local post office, for something like 75p depending on the size and weight of the parcel, so you can collect it from there at your own convenience instead.
This doesn't mean you can leave a note on your door saying "if not in please deliver to house several streets away in a different post code who probably won't be in anyway" because that's just not feasible. I have my parcels delivered to my mums house, it gives me a good excuse to go visit plus she feels good about being able to help. My friend has his parcels delivered to his corner shop, and will usually buy something when he collects it, so they're both happy. Many online shopping sites have a place you can specify "special instructions" so you can state a safe place where they can leave it.Īlternatively you can have it delivered to a neighbour or family member, just speak to them beforehand and clear it with them. If you have a storage box round back, or a safe place they can leave it, then let them know.
If you know you're not going to be in, you can save everyone's time by speaking to your postie, or leaving them a note. Every week or so I see a post on here about how Royal Mail won't jump through multiple hoops and risk losing their job so that you can save £2 on something that you can buy in a supermarket on your weekly shop.
